Literacy Test Headed for Repeal

A bipartisan group of state lawmakers want to repeal a portion of the state constitution linked to the days of white supremacy.  The house elections committee voted unanimously Wednesday to delete the literacy test requirements for voter registration.  The test was added to the constitution by Democrats more than a century ago to suppress turnout among black voters.  It isn't enforced because it violates federal law.  The bill would place a constitutional amendment before voters next year.
