Increased law enforcement planned for celebration

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) _ Problems at last year's July 4th celebration at Masonboro Island have prompted the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office and the state Division of Coastal Management to announce there will be a greater law enforcement presence this year.

Officials with both agencies said there have been a growing number of injuries and arrests for underage drinking, fighting and boating violations at the popular event.

The director of the Division of Coastal Management said there have been growing concerns about the large crowd and that hopefully the increased law enforcement presence will help deter illegal activities and keep people safe.

Masonboro Island Reserve is part of the North Carolina Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve in Wilmington.
